I spent 3 weeks in 4 different areas of Costa Rica. However, the only pay for play I found was in the city of San Jose, which is the largest city in Costa Rica. I will not report on the non productive cities as my time was spent in those places drinking beer and hanging on the beaches.

Before I left I did some internet searching and found little if any info on the availability of sex in Costa Rica. I did find a few places listed in 1 or 2 reports and made a few notes before my trip.

The scene in CR isnt at all like the scene in Thailand. Sex for money is legal in Costa Rica. All of the girls seem to be under age 30, most are about 20-24. VERY little girl friend type experiences there. ie you pay the girl..she gets you off and your business if over. I did see 1 guy at the hotel that had 2 different girls on 2 occasions. They would be with him at breakfast so I guess he probably paid more for these extended engagements. Thats probably what the $100 gets you. On my trip I shagged 8 girls at several places. Really only one bad experience.

Here are the places I visited while in San Jose.

Blue Marlin bar in the Hotel Del Rey... I booked into the Hotel Del Rey in San Jose. Little did I know it was the epicenter of whores in San Jose. There must have been 6 before noon and the numbers grew to standing room only in the early afternoon. The hotel location is good, but I changed to a different hotel after a side trip to another area of CR and had my charge card and travelers checks stolen. I thought they had been stolen at the Hotel Del Rey. I think they were actually stolen on the bus to another area. Moral...watch your stuff MORE so in Costa Rica. You have to get up early to rip me off...but it happened to me the first week right under my nose. The checks and cc were replaced within 3 days and no expense to me, so all turned out well, but it was a bit of a hassle. I moved to the Hotel Presidente for the remainder of days in San Jose. It is also centrally located but no hookers to trip over when entering and exiting the hotel. Many of the girls in the Hotel Del Rey bar (the Blue Marlin) were very pretty, but their asking price started at $100. I considered that out of my pprice range and quickly found other places that had better rates. It is possible to get these girls for a better price (ie maybe $50) in early afternoon or maybe 2am when they know you are their last chance for the night. I suspect the best are gone early.

Ricos bar... This bar is right across the street from the Hotel Del Rey. I met a nice guy that worked there named Dirk. He is a German/Tico. He was very helpful with suggesting other places for pay for play. I cross checked my list with his suggestions and many were on my list and I also added a few more. I'd suggest you look him up if you are in San Jose. No working girls there but great info on the local hot spots from a resident bar tender.

Idem... First stop was a place called Idem about a 5 blocks walk. I'd suggest a taxi for getting there and returning. I never had a problem walking there but the more I talked to people in San Jose the more I learned about muggings and robberies while walking on some streets....so take a taxi. It's a cheap ride...maybe $2. Idem is a bar with many freelancers working there. They lineup along the wall setting at tables. You sit at a table or the bar and scan the line of girls. If you see someone that strikes your fancy, you ask her over for a chat and a closer look. Most of the girls there speak little if any English. Best if you can speak a bit of Spanish. I don't and got along fine..but it would enhance your experience. Once you make your selection, you go to either 2 rooms downstairs (VERY nice rooms) or 1 of several upstairs rooms. The cost for the downstairs rooms including the girl is $50 and the upstairs rooms are $40. Shower down the hall and private showers in the rooms downstairs. I never used the downstairs rooms but it might be worth the extra $10. I visited Idem many nights and it was my overall favorite place in San Jose. Good selection of girls and clean rooms. Took 4 girls upstairs on my visits. 2 Nicaraguans and 2 Tico girls. Only bad one was the stunner from Nicaragua. I knew she would be, but this thing between my legs made me take her.

Camelot... I tried a local Tico bar called Camelot. It was full of Ticos drinking and smoking with loud music. I was about to leave when I stuck up a conversation with a young Tico guy and over a beer we discussed what I was there for. There were few girls there and none I would even consider going with. Then bingo out of no where enters this young Tico girl that was slim and very pretty. He knew her and called her over. She was 19. She wanted $25 for her services(included room). We went upstairs to the rather dirty dim lit room and she turned to a cold fish. I did the deed and wanted out asap. She jumps up and grabs our clothes and exits to the shower across the hall. OK...I follow and she points for me to turn on the water in the shower. I hop in and she closes the curtain behind me. It's taking her a bit too long to get into the shower, so I quickly open the curtain and I catch her with MY money in her hand moving it from my pocket to her pocket of her pants. I stop her and she mumbles something and the money goes back into my pants pocket. It wasn't much money (like I say..you got to get up to rip me off) but it was the idea. I quickly showered, dressed and got out of there. I decided not to make any trouble in the bar..she could probably make more trouble for me than I could for her. I'd stay clear of this place at all costs.

Chispas Club (formally know as The Door or Green Door)...I took a taxi to this place one afternoon. It is a private club deal where you pay $100 for an afternoon of playing with the girls in attendance, all afternoon if you like. Get them all naked in the hot tub and relax. They have a pool, hot tub, pool table etc. Its a nice place actually. Then you select your girl for a massage and sex for a full hour. You can then stay as long as you like drinking etc. I didn't partake, but it might be a nice change for those that are into all afternoon affairs, however the quality of the girls was not great when I was there.

Krysis... I took a taxi to this place one afternoon because of the great reports I got from someone about how pretty the girls were. It is a massage place. I entered and I saw some scary ladyboy looking girls and about ran out the door. It might be worth another visit based on the reports I got. The cost was $70 I think.

Arte Sauna... This is a true massage parlor place with from 3 to 8 girls in attendance all day. Some are very attractive. They set and watch TV until they are selected. The most girls are there around 3 to 6pm. The rooms are OK. Shower down the hall. I visited twice and had a good experience both times. There are massage tables in the rooms..ie not beds..and the girls do give you a pretty good massage. The massage of course is followed by sex. The quality of the sex is dependent on the girl as always. I did like the place but hated those tables for the sex. Cost is $40 for an hour. They have 2 sauna rooms that are so frickin hot you will pass out if you stay in for more than about 5 minutes. This place is worth a visit.

Key Largo Club... I dropped into this place one afternoon. It was too early for girls, but I hear there are many there in the evening. Right around the corner from the Hotel Del Rey.

Eros... This place is right across the street from Idem. Just a door you get buzzed into. You have to look closely for this place. Make sure you don't go to the corner bar across the street..it is gay! Many pretty girls in attendance. They stand when you enter. You select one and she escorts you to a room in the back. Rooms were ok with bed. Shower down the hall. I got a nice massage from the girl and sex. The cost is $55 but I think the girls were a bit younger and prettier in this place and worth the extra money. I only went there 1 night because I didn't like the selection process. I did sit on a couch for a bit and chatted with a Canadian guy while eyeing the girls, but its not as comfortable as Idem in that respect. Worth a visit.

Overall impressions... Many of the sex industry girls in Costa Rica are from Nicaragua. They can be very pretty girls. The Tico girls are also very pretty. Most of the girls there have larger breasts than Asian girls and a few extra pounds on them. Most have had a baby or 2 and are supporting them. The girls were overall very pretty. Walking down any street in the city is a wonderful experience. Some great tan bodys and nice hair. I saw few if any pretty older Tico girls...ie they don't age well. I'd have to rate them below their Asian counter parts in both beauty and service, but many I'd rate equal in beauty to the prettiest Thai girls. There seemed to be little if any of the girl friend experience like in Thailand. Many guys do move to Costa Rica and retire there, find a sweet young Tico wife and play house. Living in CR is not that cheap. In fact the only thing cheap in CR is the beer and the public buses. There are many girls that would love to snag a rich gringo to up her quality of life...so a long term relationship with a young Tico girl is easy to find if that is what you are looking for.

Costa Rica is worth a trip. The flight down from San Fran was 8 hours with 1 stop in San Salvador. I'd budget about $150 a day for hotel, food and women. Hotel costs are about $80 a night for a nice room.
